Geek’s Guide to Finding a Therapist

Though the term is “popular culture,” people who engage in geeky pursuits with passion and excitement are often still considered a little something.

You know…Something.  Odd, different, quirky, obsessive.  Not always that “popular.”  Add in being a woman, queer, trans, or a person of color, and you’re walking a significantly harder road in having your geekiness accepted and celebrated.

Looking for a mental health provider can be anxiety provoking.  You want a therapist who gets you.  You want a place where you can be truthful, open, and authentic.  Maybe yours is a geekiness people can see, or maybe it’s a little geek inside of you that comes out when you engage in solitary pursuits.  Either way, it’s an important part of who you are, and you deserve a therapist who gets it, respects it, and honors it.  Not someone who is going to be confused, shaming, or try to talk you out of loving the things you love.

So, you’re on the hunt for a geek therapist?  Here are a few things to consider.

  • Ask the therapists you’re considering if they think of themselves as nerds or geeks.

  • Ask if they have worked with other clients who are nerdy or geeky.

  • Describe yourself as a nerd or geek, and see if they understand what you mean.

  • Look at therapist websites for mentions of nerdy or geeky things, their own fandoms, or other nerd/geek codes and signs that show you they get it.

  • Ask your fellow nerds and geeks about their experiences with therapists, and if they have any recommendations.

  • Don’t be afraid to reach out to several therapists to find a good fit.  Or to change therapists if it doesn’t feel like you’re connecting in an accepting and helpful way.

Embracing and celebrating geekiness is at the very heart of POW! Psychotherapy.  If you’re ready to schedule with a provider who truly gets it,
